Registration is now open for the MAHA Player Selection Camps, which are, in short, the way Michigan selects the players who represent the Great Lakes State at USA Hockey national camps.

Each year, the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association holds its Player Selection Camps. For boys, the Player Selection Camps take place first at the district level, and then at the state-wide level, to evaluate and identify the top players in the state, as selected by a panel of coaches at each location. Girls participate in a single-weekend camp in a similar selection process.

Players who are chosen by MAHA to represent Michigan at the USA Hockey Player Development Camps then compete alongside top players from across the country in their birth-year class. USA Hockey uses their national camps to identify the top players in the country, as well as complete rosters for upcoming international tournaments.

“With our Player Selection Camps, we aim to put forth the best players from Michigan to represent our state at the national level,” said Joe Jones, Player Selection Camp chair for MAHA. “We make the process as open and as accessible as possible, so that players from across the state, regardless of what team they played for in the fall, have an equal and fair opportunity.

“It also presents a unique opportunity for Michigan’s youth hockey players to know where they stand with their peers. Hockey is a sport where players develop at different times, so the Player Selection Camps can serve as a measuring stick, and let players identify their strengths and weaknesses as they continue to train and grow.”

Are the 2024 Camps considered Development or Select Camps?

For the 2007, 2008, and 2009 age groups, the main purpose of the camps is to select the players to represent Michigan for USA Hockey's National Player Development Camps this summer.  Thus, they are essentially tryouts.

For the 2010 age group, there are no USAH National Player Development Camps. While the camp format is the same, the purpose is to introduce the 2010 age group to USAH's Player Development process and to begin identifying players for future years.

My son/daughter is injured and may not be cleared to play in time for the Selection Camp. Should I still register?

Yes. Any player who wants to participate must register by the deadline. Players who are not medically cleared to play at the time their respective Selection Camp takes place will receive a full refund as long as a doctor's note is submitted.

My son plays on his high school varsity team. Should he register for Team Michigan or for his birthyear in our District?

Players have a choice. They can do one or the other, or both. If they choose to do both, two separate registrations must be submitted - one for Team Michigan, and the other for his birthyear.

Does my son have to be on his high school team to register for Team Michigan?

Yes, Team Michigan tryouts are only for players who play on MHSAA teams in their junior and senior years. Players who are on MAHA registered teams are not eligible.
