Dr. T. Sean Lynch, senior staff surgeon and Vice Chairman of Academic Affairs for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Henry Ford Health, captured the attention of the MAHA leadership attending the 2024 Summer Meeting in Grand Rapids with the launch of MAHA’s “Hockey Health & Wellness” initiative.
The new initiative will cover a variety of topics focused on MAHA’s athletes, featuring Michigan’s own “Dr. Hockey.” Insights on sports injuries, nutrition, rest & recovery, as well as player safety are just a few examples that Dr. Lynch will lend his expertise to addressing for the MAHA community.
Dr. Lynch is no stranger to Michigan’s youth hockey community. As the current Team Physician for the Detroit Lions, Dr. Lynch is a past competitive ice hockey player and a Team Physician for USA Hockey. Specializing in nonoperative and operative treatment of hip and knee disorders in athletes of all levels, with expertise in hip surgery and knee ligament reconstruction, Dr. Lynch has previously served as the Team Physician with the New York Yankees, New York City Football Club (MLS), and Fordham University.
In 2022, Dr. Lynch led successful treatment of Division 1 goaltender Kaley Doyle (Livonia, MI), who was suffering from hip pain caused by the mechanical and rotational movements of the position. Doyle required double revision hip labral repairs, after previously being treated with double hip surgeries at a local hospital in 2019. Following Dr. Lynch’s strict return-to-play regimen, Doyle was able to return to Brown University as a starting goaltender. (Click here to read Kaley’s full story)
Inspired by Kaley’s story, Little Caesars AAA goaltender Ava Mcillmurray (Hartland, MI) sought the expertise of Dr. Lynch to address a stabbing hip pain experienced during her senior year of high school. With discovery of a hip impingement and labral tears, Dr. Lynch tailored a non-operative plan to allow Ava to finish her season as well as prepare for a starting position at Lindenwood University.
