The IIHF girls hockey weekend was October 9-11.  There were 138 host sites across the country and 14 held in Michigan.  Many of the associations held try hockey for free events in an effort to grow the game and provide exposure for girls hockey.  On Sunday in Plymouth at the new USA Hockey Arena several of the local girls teams were announced that were in attendance. It was a great weekend and USA Hockey reports that girls and women are up 2500 players from last year at this time.

Here in Michigan, the Midland Amateur Hockey League (MAHL) hosted a "Girls' Try Hockey for Free" today at the Midland Civic Arena. The new girls who cam out to try the sport had a blast! The Midland girls' team players kept them busy waiting to take the ice, then helped on the ice, and MAHL provided pizza afterwards.

MAHL's girls numbers are growing in our younger youth divisions along with our Girls 19U House B team rostering their largest team ever at 19 players.  The GTHFF has helped introduce girls to this great sport. They plan to continue to grow girls hockey in Mid-Michigan.
