The Michigan Amateur Hockey Association is devastated to learn of 12-year-old Thatcher Markham’s passing as a result of the flash flooding in the Houghton area on Sunday.

Thatcher was a hockey player in the Houghton area who skated with Copper Country Hockey since age 5 and also served as a referee. MAHA’s VP of Officials Judy Niemi (District 8) described Thatcher as a “gifted athlete with a forever smile.”

The Markham family has been involved with hockey in the Copper Country for many generations. Thatcher’s grandfather, Jim Markham, was remembered for his years of service and dedication working with MAHA.

There is a GoFundMe page available to help Thatcher’s family in their time of need. In just one day thus far, the outpouring of support has seen more than $77,000 raised of their initial $15,000 goal.

MAHA would like to extend its sincere condolences to the Markham family, as we keep them in our thoughts.

Recovery efforts

An inspiring note from MAHA D8 Chairperson Cathy Starrett on the relief efforts: “The other thing that has been amazing is the way the communities have stepped up to help their neighbors.  I'm proud to say that included in that group has been Team Copper Country.  Micah Stipech has had some of his players shoveling mud from people's homes the last couple of days.  There's a lot of work to do but I have faith in these yoopers.”

It's a silver lining in an awful tragedy, but it’s another reminder of what makes the Michigan hockey community the very best.
