Next Step After District Camps

Once the District Camps are complete, the top players will be chosen to go to the final step in Michigan, where players from the 2007, 2008, and 2009 birth years will be chosen to attend National Development Camp in Buffalo this summer.

The 2007s and 2008s will attend Taylor May 17-19. There will be 4 teams at each age group. Players who went to National Camp last year already have spots in Taylor. The players chosen from the District Camps to attend Taylor will be posted on this site by April 29.

The 2009s who are chosen will attend LSSU June 16-23, with the 2010s going June 23-28. There are 6 teams at each age group. The players chosen to attend LSSU will be posted on this website by May 6.

WAITLIST INFORMATION

During the course of registration for the Boys Development camps, positions at locations will fill and players will be directed to the wait list. This DOES NOT always mean that your child will not get to participate in camp. Our initial registration is set with a minimum number of teams with a balanced amount of players. We will fill those teams first. This allows our teams to have an equal amount of forwards, defense, and goalies. From there, all other players are directed to the waitlist. As we progress through the registration timeframe, we form additional teams as the numbers allow. Players are added to form these teams in the order that they are added to the waitlist (as each and every registration is time-stamped). Therefore, we encourage everyone who is directed to do so to register for the waitlist. In past years, approximately 90-95% of players who were placed on the waitlist made it into the main camp. Please continue to watch your email for updates on your registration--especially if you are waitlisted! Also note--players may only complete one registration, so if you are on a waitlist at one location, you will not be able to register for an open spot at an additional location. It is in your best interest to put your player on the waitlist in your desired location. Please reach our to the camp coordinators using the link at the bottom of the page with additional questions.

What are the MAHA Player Selection Camps?

It’s a common question this time of year.

In short, it’s the way Michigan selects the players who represent the Great Lakes State at USA Hockey national camps.

Each year, the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association holds its Player Selection Camps. For boys, the Player Selection Camps take place first at the district level, and then at the state-wide level, to evaluate and identify the top players in the state, as selected by a panel of coaches at each location. Girls participate in a single-weekend camp in a similar selection process.

Players who are chosen by MAHA to represent Michigan at the USA Hockey Player Development Camps then compete alongside top players from across the country in their birth-year class. USA Hockey uses their national camps to identify the top players in the country, as well as complete rosters for upcoming international tournaments.

“With our Player Selection Camps, we aim to put forth the best players from Michigan to represent our state at the national level,” said Joe Jones, Player Selection Camp chair for MAHA. “We make the process as open and as accessible as possible, so that players from across the state, regardless of what team they played for in the fall, have an equal and fair opportunity.

“It also presents a unique opportunity for Michigan’s youth hockey players to know where they stand with their peers. Hockey is a sport where players develop at different times, so the Player Selection Camps can serve as a measuring stick, and let players identify their strengths and weaknesses as they continue to train and grow.”

Frequently Asked Questions

The purpose of this section is to answer the questions parents and players have frequently asked. This section will be updated as needed in the coming months.

Are the 2024 Camps considered Development or Select Camps?

For the 2007, 2008, and 2009 age groups, the main purpose of the camps is to select the players to represent Michigan for USA Hockey's National Player Development Camps this summer.  Thus, they are essentially tryouts.

For the 2010 age group, there are no USAH National Player Development Camps. While the camp format is the same, the purpose is to introduce the 2010 age group to USAH's Player Development process and to begin identifying players for future years.

My son/daughter is injured and may not be cleared to play in time for the Selection Camp. Should I still register?

Yes. Any player who wants to participate must register by the deadline. Players who are not medically cleared to play at the time their respective Selection Camp takes place will receive a full refund as long as a doctor's note is submitted.

My son plays on his high school varsity team. Should he register for Team Michigan or for his birthyear in our District?

Players have a choice. They can do one or the other, or both. If they choose to do both, two separate registrations must be submitted - one for Team Michigan, and the other for his birthyear.

Does my son have to be on his high school team to register for Team Michigan?

Yes, Team Michigan tryouts are only for players who play on MHSAA teams in their junior and senior years. Players who are on MAHA registered teams are not eligible.
